Streaming has become the new cable. Most people these days are opting to make the switch to popular streaming sites like Netflix and Hulu because of the flexibility and freedom they offer. But what is Hulu exactly and how does it work? How does one create a Hulu account? And how many people can watch Hulu from one account at the same time? All of those questions and more are about to be answered. Here’s everything you need to know before cutting the cable and making the switch to Hulu.
Hulu is an on-demand video streaming service that allows people to watch series, movies, or documentaries via the internet. The service has an impressive library of content which is being added every week. But it doesn’t have everything one might want to watch. However, the service did recently add a live streaming service called Hulu Live TV. This service allows people to watch live television from 50 popular networks, including news and sports channels.
What makes Hulu so popular, currently, is the quick rate at which series episodes are uploaded. A new episode will usually make it to the streaming service a day or less than a week after it’s been aired. And this is much quicker than most other services like Netflix or Showmax. Hulu also has a big library of content from most of the major networks – although it mostly focuses on newer series and movies. The Discovery network recently signed a deal with Hulu as well, to bring channels like TLC, Animal Planet, and The Discovery Channel to the service, too.
Currently, Hulu is only available in the U.S., U.S. military bases, and Japan. But Disney, that has a major stake in Hulu stated they are working on expanding to an international audience.
How to sign up for Hulu?
It’s quite easy to sign up for Hulu, and it can be done within a few minutes from either a computer or mobile device. Hulu doesn’t require any extra equipment or installation fees that usually come with the cable.
Hulu is available on practically any major device currently on the market. So availability shouldn’t be an issue either. Everything from mobile devices to television, consoles, and streaming devices like the Amazon firestick support Hulu.
To get Hulu, visit their website and either click on the free trial to start with or select one of the payment plans. Choose a “TV Experience” and then go on to create a Hulu account. After that, it’s simply a matter of logging in to Hulu through any device that you want to use.
How much does Hulu cost per month?
The streaming service has various subscription plans and add-ons to choose from, making it a flexible option for anyone’s budget. There’s a free seven-day trial for anyone who wants to check out what’s on offer before committing financially. However, the service still requires a credit card to be added for the trial. So be sure to cancel before then if you realize that you don’t want to commit to the service.
There are two main subscription plans on offer, namely the regular streaming service and the streaming service with live TV added. From there the subscription plans can be personalized. There’s no contract to be signed when creating a Hulu account so these subscriptions can be changed or canceled at any time with no repercussions.
The standard Hulu streaming plan:
- Full access to the Hulu streaming library with some commercials at $7.99/month
- Full access to the Hulu streaming library with no commercials at $11.99/month
Both options come with a free first month.
The Hulu Live TV streaming plan:
- Full access to the Hulu streaming library and over 50 live channels with some commercials at $39.99/month
- Full access to the Hulu streaming library and over 50 live channels with no commercials at $43.99/month
There are also some extra add-ons to choose from that come at an additional cost. Anyone who gets either one of the on-demand Hulu and Hulu Live TV options also gets to decide if they want some additional subscriptions. Currently, the additional networks on offer are Cinemax at $10, HBO at $15, Showtime at $9, and Starz at $9 per month. Live TV users can also opt to get an additional 200 hours of online DVR storage space at $15 per month.
Thus, depending on the chosen option, a Hulu subscription can range from anywhere between $8 and $108 per month. Which is a massive range of affordability according to each person’s individual budget options.
How many people can watch Hulu at once?
Of course, users will want to have more options regarding how and when they can watch Hulu. Sometimes it’s nice to stay at home and watch something on TV. Other times it’s nice to have some viewing options when on a long road trip or staying overnight at a hotel. Then there’s also the whole issue of some household members wanting to watch different things at different times.
How many people can use Hulu at once depends on the options that were chosen at the sign-up. These options can be changed at any time if a person is willing to pay the additional monthly fee of whichever new option they want to add.
Hulu multiple screens
The basic Hulu subscription for both on-demand and Hulu Live TV plans offers users the possibility to watch series and movies on two separate screens at the same time. Any person who wants to watch on a third screen will be disappointed with an error message. Luckily, the service does offer the option to watch on additional multiple screens, but for a fee, of course.
The option to upgrade is currently going at $15. This upgrade offers users the possibility to watch on unlimited screens at home and additional three screens while on the move.
Hulu can be viewed on multiple devices at the same time, but the number of devices will depend on the add-ons chosen. Again, the base service only offers the possibility to watch it on two screens at a time, regardless of which devices are used.

What to do if Hulu is not working?
There have been some user complaints about Hulu not working. Sometimes, for whatever reason, Hulu will stop working properly or give an error message. It may happen due to the service maintenance – but you can easily check that on a site like Downdetector.
Other times, it may be a specific issue that has to do with an individual account. In that case, it’s best to check out Hulu’s troubleshooting guide. If that fails as well, then it’s time to contact the Hulu support center.
Luckily, there haven’t been too many complaints about this service, so you shouldn’t worry about not getting value for money.
How to cancel a Hulu subscription?
While Hulu does offer an excellent subscription service, some people may want to cancel their Hulu subscription. This can easily be done on either a computer or a mobile device via the Hulu app.
Just log into the Hulu account, click on the “Account” button and choose the “Cancel” option. Then follow the instructions from there. Unfortunately, though, for some reason, the iOS app doesn’t support the cancel feature yet. Thus, iPhone users will have to open up a browser and cancel the subscription from there for now.
Canceling via PlayStation, Xbox, or iTunes is a bit different from the process above but is still possible. This Lifewire blog post describes the steps that need to be taken to cancel a Hulu account from each platform in detail.
There’s no cancellation fee, and a Hulu subscription or any of its add-ons can be canceled at any time. Canceling any of the add-ons won’t cancel the subscription, but their fees will still be deducted at the end of the current month. So it’s best to cancel any subscriptions or add-ons at the end of the month. Hulu will also keep a record of the login details if a person ever wants to re-subscribe.
And there it is! Everything anyone needs to know about what Hulu is and how Hulu works in this short and easy guide.
